KEY VERSE
"Do nothing from rivalry or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus..." (Philippians 2:3-5)
CENTRAL TRUTH
As Christians, we are to exhibit a servant hearts with Christ as our example.
DEVOTION
As Paul writes here to the people at Philippi, he is, himself, being an example of Christ. He is encouraging others in their faith while he is in prison, where he faces possible death. Since he is unable to visit them, he sends them a letter to thank them for their faithful support and to challenge them to Christian maturity. In contrast to the examples of Christ and Paul is Uriah Heep, a villain in the novel David Copperfield by Charles Dickens. A bitter, vengeful character, he was constantly working in a corrupt manner to try to control others. As devoid of humility as he was of morality, Heep repeatedly states, "I'm so ‘umble." Dickens created such a striking character that a dictionary definition of Uriah Heep is "a hypocritically humble person." While we may not be superficially humble like Uriah Heep, we may think it is impossible to have the humility of Christ. Yet, as Paul reminded the Philippians, we have, through Jesus, the mind to demonstrate a caring servanthood when we follow his example. One illustration is found in John 13, where Jesus washes His disciples' feet-definitely the act of a servant. Though the carnal nature may cry out, "Me first," we are empowered by the Holy Spirit, who dwells in us, to consider others first. Working behind the scenes or committing little anonymous acts of kindness are indications of a Christian spirit of humility. The basis for acting as a servant is love for others. Such love comes from God who first loved us and sent His Son to show us His love. Dying for our sins, Jesus demonstrated the greatest kind of love. May we be encouraged to show His love by our actions.
