TODAY'S BIBLE PASSAGE : Judges 15

KEY VERSE
"Then the Spirit of the Lord rushed upon him, and the ropes that were on his arms became as flax that has caught fire, and his bonds melted off his hands." (Judges 15:14b / ESV)

CENTRAL TRUTH
The Lord gives His servants strength to accomplish His purposes.

DEVOTION

It has been reported that escape artist Harry Houdini had specific "tricks" for getting out of self-imposed restraints (even ropes!) that made him a popular entertainer. Do you think he ever read the account of Samson in the book of Judges? Who knows! Samson's strength was of God; he did not need any such "tricks." Though his flaws were of his own humanity, God used him in mind-blowing ways!

Samson, though the son of Godly parents, is definitely one of those studies in contrast when we look at his life and twenty-year tenure as one of Judah's judges. There are times when he just appeared to be, as my dad used to say, "a half bubble off-plumb." It is clear, however, that his amazing physical prowess was given entirely by God for the express purpose of delivering His people from their enemies...enemies they often failed to eliminate as God had intended after they entered the Promised Land.

It's always interesting to see how God used his chosen servants, despite their human weaknesses. He has given us so many examples in Scripture that the message should be crystal clear: None of us is perfect, but He can use us anyway if we but remember our heritage and call on Him for deliverance.

While we are often prone to self-confidence, perhaps even pride, great and eternally-lasting events are going to happen only through His Providence and the strength we are given to accomplish His purposes in our lives. Along the way, we may lose our footing, maybe even our grip, but He is the God of restoration and will hear our cries for deliverance.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
  1. How has God provided a special strength to carry out one of His purposes for you?
  2. How is God teaching you to be more reliant on His strength?

I was extremely blessed with godly parents and grandparents. Their influence on my life was, and continues to be, profound, even though they are now in heaven. What an example they set, and how grateful I am!
