KEY VERSE
"The apostles said to the Lord, ‘Increase our faith!'" (Luke 17:5)
CENTRAL TRUTH
Christ is our ultimate teacher.
DEVOTION
Purpose! Have you ever questioned your purpose? In Luke 19:10 we see that Christ knew His purpose: to seek and to save the lost. Throughout these chapters we are reading this week, we constantly see Christ instructing His disciples. Jesus explains to them a number of practical matters, including forgiveness, discipleship, money, thankfulness, His second coming, and salvation. What a blessing it was for His disciples to have Jesus so compassionately teaching them. If only we could have been there! As a home-schooled student, I am a self-directed learner, while my mother helps guide me. I enjoy learning at home and have talked with people about specific teachers that they had in their past that truly made a difference in their lives. These instructors challenged and encouraged them to think and to go beyond the norm. Because of their influence, many lives have been changed for the better. As I think about the opportunity the disciples had to learn from Christ and to have their questions answered, it makes me think about everything I would have loved to ask Him. I would definitely ask what my purpose in life was to be. Although I might not be able to sit in front of Jesus in the same way the disciples did, I do realize that I can still talk to Him and know He understands my questions and will supply the answers I need according to His plan for my life. These four chapters demonstrate to me just how much Christ was willing to teach, serve, and reach the lost even though the cross was in view. His example challenges and confronts me with the question of my willingness to serve with that same sense of urgency. How about you? In Christ we have the ultimate teacher. All the answers to life's questions can be found as we place ourselves under His instruction. May I encourage you to choose Christ's instruction to the teachings of the world and His purpose for us here. The truths found in God's Word will challenge and equip us for His purpose for our lives.
